Additional Expansion Rounds: depending on the type of yarn used and the size of the wearer's head, the pattern may require more or less expansion than this. If you need more, just add 1 more stitch between the *'s per expanding row.
Expansion-free Rounds: Ch 2, dc in every st, and slst in 2nd ch. Make as many as needed untily you reach just above the hat recipient's eyebrows.
Penultimate (because "next to last" just isn't cool enough) Round: Ch 2 and *dc in next 19 stitches then dc decrease 1 stitch.* Repeat from * to * until you run out of 20 stitch chunks then join with slst in 2nd ch.
Explanation: yarn stretches and in order to keep the hat on you need a slightly snugger bit near the band.
Finishing Round: 2 ch, dc in every stitch, and join with slst in 2nd ch. Bind off and weave in tail.
